The East European economies have spent the best part of two decades transitioning from state-directed to privately-owned markets. While much of the region seemed ready to ride the crest of a boom, the economic recession has put the clock back.

Economic and political stability – including for 10 countries membership of the European Union – boosted investors' confidence, but the global economic slowdown has taken its toll.
